NYWBA’s Animal Law and WBASNY’s Environmental Law Committees present a CLE Program:
The Elephant in the Zoo(m):  Should Non-Humans and Natural Resources be Considered “Persons” Under the Law?

On May 18, 2022, the New York Court of Appeals heard the habeus corpus petition involving “Happy the Elephant” and considered whether she is a person under the law. Recent legal efforts in the environmental field have asked similar questions as to natural resources, such as lakes. Join us for a thoughtful discussion on these issues, and the potential climate change and biodiversity repercussions to future generations should these efforts fail.

Speakers: Courtney Fern, Director of Government Relations and Campaigns, The Nonhuman Rights Project and Terry Lodge, Esq., Law Office of Terry Jonathan Lodge

Moderator: Mariann Sullivan, Adjunct Professor of Animal Law at Cornell Law School and Co-Host of the Our Hen House podcast
